On June 16th,
Dan and I loaded up with six of the seven students and headed down to Niles to
pick up our 7th student who was meeting us on our way down to
Cincinnati! We were truly staying n Botavia just outside of Cincinnati. We were
heading down to serve with many other students for The Week of Hope through
Group Missions.
Our group was
broken up into three different crews. I had a crew with Taryn, Brennon, and
Alex from our church and then Nick and Will from another youth group. Pastor
Dan had Madalyn and Allyson from our church and some from another youth group
also. Evan and Tylor were with another youth group.
My crew was serving at a
ministry call Matthew 25: Ministries. It is an amazing place to serve. They are
an international humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization. They have
many different stations to serve at there. The station we worked at before
lunch the first day, was sorting gently used clothing by adult and children.
After lunch we sorted adult diapers and pads, which was actually an awesome
thing to do. We learned that they do it because in third world countries the
young women and women don’t have and feminine products and so when they get
there period, the girls have to miss school that whole time. I’m ashamed of how
much we waste in America. They were getting rid of these products because they
just “didn’t make the cut” There was nothing wrong with them, and they were
going to throw them away. I’m so glad that M25M could send them away to get
used. We listened to a lot of Disney music in the car on the way to Cincinnati,
and so it continued during the week. It was awesome! The boys on our crew from
the other youth group loved it! They joined right in with the singing and
dancing! Tuesday we headed back. We were placed in Mary’s group. There we un
packaged and sorting new adult clothing. There were a lot of things to remember
to do and how to sort the clothes it was kind of frustrating for the kids
because Mary wasn’t very warm. But we just surrounded her with love! It was
awesome. The next day when we came in Mary was working with other students and
we all yelled good morning to Mary, she had the biggest smile on her face and
wished us a good morning also! We got another chance to help Mary during the
week, she was much warmer to us the second time! It was great! Some of the
other stations we had during the week were awesome! We got to empty pump soap
bags into five gallon buckets and then empty those buckets into a 350 gallon
container. That contain gets shipped to a village in a third world country and
each family gets a five gallon bucket to use for washing everything from dishes
to bodies! They also recycle paint there, and so we spent time scraping paint
from paint cans into 55 gallon drums of broad colors. One the drums were filled
it gets mixed together and then poured into buckets to send on projects to
paint houses! We just had a really blessed week in Cincinnati!
We celebrated Brennon’s
birthday while we were there. We went out to dinner at Zip’s, and then headed
to get Graters ice cream! It was sure yummy!
